IPY-5 Progress Update Report 2026 Published
In October 2026, the International Polar Year 2032–2033 Progress Update Report, including the updated IPY-5 planning timeline, was released and is now available for download here.
The report takes stock of preparations for IPY-5 and sets out the work ahead as planning moves towards the main implementation period in 2032–33. It covers the international planning structure, national involvement and the development of processes for endorsing IPY-5 projects and activities.
Among the developments covered is the new IPY-5 International Coordination Office, which will begin its work in early 2027. The office will be hosted by a consortium comprising UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the Norwegian Polar Institute, the Korea Polar Research Institute and the Chilean Antarctic Institute. Its main office will be based in Tromsø, with regional offices in the Republic of Korea and Chile.
The report also provides an update on IPY-5 National Committees. Several countries have already established committees, and further national planning efforts are expected during 2026. The National Representatives Coordination Committee, due to launch in November 2026, will help connect these national efforts with the international planning process.
Work is also under way on the IPY-5 project endorsement system. The system will cover research, observing, education, outreach, capacity-building and knowledge-sharing activities. More detailed guidance on the international and national endorsement processes is expected later in 2026.
